Bringing more than 20 years' experience in the field of energy efficiency planning, policy and program design and evaluation, Glenn Reed was recently promoted to Director of Regional Initiatives at NEEP. In his new role, he is responsible for shaping the research and evaluation, commercial (motors, HVAC, lighting, and building energy codes policy and development) and residential initiatives (ENERGY STAR lighting and appliances, HVAC and windows) at NEEP. Additionally, he will oversee the Building Energy Performance and Advanced Building Guidelines efforts. Under Reed's leadership in his previous position as manager of residential programs at NEEP, the sponsors of the ENERGY STAR Appliances and Lighting initiatives were honored by the Environmental Protection Agency with its Excellence in Consumer Education/Leadership in Energy Efficiency award for four consecutive years, and was recognized by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) as an exemplary program. |
Reed's appointment comes as part of some organizational changes at NEEP prompted by the development and approval by its Board of a new strategic plan, according to Executive Director Susan Coakley.
"As NEEP moves forward and focuses its efforts in the areas of regional initiatives, training, and outreach, it was crucial for us to add someone with Glenn's level of expertise," said Coakley. "I am positive that Glenn's vision and leadership will have a tremendous impact on our regional initiatives."
Reed said he was excited about the challenge of helping to lead all of NEEP's regional initiatives, and looked forward to working with the sponsors and partners who have helped make those initiatives national models. "It's been my good fortune to have worked with some very talented and dedicated energy efficiency program administrators on the residential initiatives," he noted. "I look forward to continuing that work, and to broadening my responsibilities to commercial and industrial initiatives, research and evaluation, and building energy code efforts as well."
Reed concludes, "In order for market transformation to really happen in the consumer and commercial arenas, an even more integrated and inclusive approach where our sponsors, manufacturers and associations are aligned and supportive of our regional initiatives needs to take place. My goal is to bring previously untapped points of view into focus, which I believe will help us enormously in designing and implementing very strategic and mutually beneficial programs."
Reed has been with NEEP since 2000. Previously, he held the position of deputy director of East Coast consulting at XENERGY, Inc., where he was responsible for demand-side management and market research, program design and evaluation for electric utilities and government agencies. Prior to that, he was principal planner at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy Resources where he was responsible for all state building code energy efficiency issues and appliance efficiency standards activities. He was also involved with utility conservation and load management program design and evaluation. Seeking to marry his love of technology with policy, Reed entered the energy industry after earning an undergraduate degree in biology but not wanting to pursue a career in biological research. He received his master's degree in energy management and policy from the University of Pennsylvania, and his bachelor's degree in biology from Wesleyan University.
