Regional Environmental Protection Agency office recognizes NEEP and sponsors

Building on the recognition NEEP received at the 2005 ENERGY STAR Awards Ceremony in Washington, DC in March, the New England Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Office awarded Environmental Merit Awards to NEEP and the sponsors of the Northeast ENERGY STAR Lighting and Appliance Initiative on May 17. The Northeast Lighting and Appliance Initiative, a coordinated regional implementation effort involving program sponsors in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and Long Island, was acknowledged for its efforts to successfully promote ENERGY STAR compact flourescent light bulbs (CFLs), fixtures and appliances.

Attending the ceremony at historic Fanueil Hall in Boston were (pictured from left to right): Norm Barry and Gary Elliott from Connecticut Light and Power, Tony Fornuto from Western Massachusetts Electric Company, Scott O'Loughlin from Unitil, Kate Ringe-Welch from National Grid, Glenn Reed from NEEP, and Peter Feroli from Applied Proactive Technologies.

The regional Environmental Merit Award recognized Initiative sponsors for their outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by bringing ENERGY STAR to communities across the Northeast. Through strategies such as consumer and retailer education, product incentives and market actor partnerships, Initiative sponsors leveraged $10 million in manufacturer discounts and half a million dollars in industry marketing to sell more than 3 million ENERGY STAR qualified products.

The Northeast ENERGY STAR Lighting and Appliance Initiative is facilitated by NEEP through the regional Northeast ENERGY STAR Products Initiative. Award recipients included: the United Illuminating Company, Connecticut Light & Power, Narragansett Electric (a National Grid company), the Long Island Power Authority, Efficiency Vermont, NSTAR Electric, Western Massachusetts Electric Company, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, and Massachusetts Electric and Nantucket Electric (both National Grid companies).
