Initial funding for NEEP came in the form of a two-year grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency beginning October 1, 1996, which enabled NEEP to:
  • Build support for market transformation and regional initiatives to increase energy efficiency;
  • Coordinate at least the first two regional market transformation initiatives; and
  • Identify additional market transformation opportunities for implementation.

The U.S. Department of Energy provided funding for policy outreach and for coordinating efforts in Northeast states to upgrade and improve implementation of building energy codes (the latter continues to this day).

Sponsors and Supporters

Today, in addition to continued funding from the U.S. EPA and DOE, our sponsors and underwriters (energy efficiency program administrators, including electric and gas utilities, state agencies and authorities) participate in NEEP-coordinated Regional Initiatives; Policy, Outreach and Communications projects; or Training and Education efforts by providing financial support depending upon project or initiative. All of NEEP's efforts have in common the ability to leverage resources and facilitate partnerships in order to:

  • Increase the commitment of Northeast states to energy efficiency policies and programs;
  • Increase the marketplace availability and adoption of quality energy efficient practices and technologies;
  • And increase the availability and use of effective training and education services regarding best practices to design, building and maintain buildings in an energy and resource efficient manner.
